For many couples, not being able to conceive naturally and being diagnosed with sterility has serious effects on their physical and psychological well-being (somatic symptomatology), and has effects on daily activities and even intellectual activities. Our experience tells us that in some occasions, all this can create barriers for communication, feelings of helplessness, difficulties for sexual relations, anxiety, tiredness, sleep problems, eating disorders, problems in relations with others, concentration issues… Psychological problems commonly associated with the treatment are depression and anxiety.Anxiety can be caused by the treatment and by feeling scared of the thought of the treatment failing. Depression can be caused by the difficulties in conceiving and because positive results are not as quick as one would wish them to be. A link between hyperprolactinemia induced by anxiety and not being able to conceive could exist. Therefore, psychological help to reduce anxiety levels can play an important role in increasing the chances for conception. At the same time, a better adjustment from the individual or the couple, individually and socially, raises satisfaction levels towards the results of the infertility treatment. Obtaining information at the same time the couple tries to conceive with no success. Knowing the impact that being diagnosed with sterility is causing in each of the members of the couple, and how they are taking it. Finding out possible consequences of previous treatments, if there have been any. Informing on the difficulties the couple will find on a psychological level, and suggesting that if the problem is faced in the correct manner, difficulties decrease. Personality questionnaire, to be used for obtaining information and a profile, and that will help in future assessment.
Communicate the test results, and in case of need, train in the learning of relaxation techniques and specific strategies for anxiety control (restructuring thought patterns, preparation to receive negative news, ways of seeking for support in the other or in others, strategies to increase the perception of control).
Check for the usefulness of the information that was received, and help to solve possible difficulties. Finish the learning of the aforementioned techniques. The possibility of consulting for problems that may arise later is open and will depend on each case.
